Idle running & energy3 min read

No useful air. Still an electricity bill.

You can hear the machine running, yet it is adding no useful compressed air. Make the cost of unloaded operation visible and see where to start.

How much energy does an unloaded compressor use?

01Distinguish loaded, unloaded and stopped states

A loaded compressor produces compressed air. During unloaded running the drive remains active while the machine is relieved of load. When stopped, the main drive is no longer running, although auxiliary equipment may still consume power. Record these states separately; total operating hours are insufficient.

02Calculate idle-running costs from measurements

Unloaded energy equals measured unloaded power multiplied by unloaded hours. For example, 8 kW over 1,800 hours equals 14,400 kWh. At an assumed €0.20/kWh, this costs €2,880 per year. These are illustrative values: use your own measurements and electricity rate. Integrate power over time when it varies.

03Why nameplate power is insufficient

Rated power does not describe actual electrical demand in every operating state. Current measurement alone is not necessarily active power measurement. Energy accounting must consider the measurement method, power factor and changing load. Actual electrical power per machine supports meaningful comparisons.

04How can unnecessary idle running be reduced?

Examine compressor combinations, pressure bands and transitions. A better combination may meet demand with fewer unloaded machines. Permitted starts, run-on periods and manufacturer requirements constrain the strategy. Unchecked shutdown changes can increase wear or compromise supply.

05How do you verify improvement?

Compare unloaded energy, air volume and pressure under similar production conditions. Fewer unloaded hours only demonstrate improvement alongside reliable supply and appropriate energy use. Visualisation should cover individual machines and the complete station.
